Tax Allowances
Keeping More of What You Earn
Many people pay more tax than they need to simply because they’re unaware of the allowances and reliefs available to them. Tax allowances can increase your take-home pay or reduce your overall tax bill, depending on your circumstances.
Below is an overview of common allowances and reliefs that may apply to you.
Marriage Allowance
If you’re married or in a civil partnership and one partner earns below the Personal Allowance threshold, you may be able to transfer £1,260 of unused allowance to your partner — potentially saving up to £252 per year.
Uniform Tax Relief
If your job requires you to wear a uniform and you’re responsible for washing, repairing or replacing it yourself, you may be able to claim tax relief on those costs.
Working from Home Tax Relief
If you’re required to work from home, you may be able to claim tax relief on additional household costs such as heating or electricity.
Personal Allowance
Most people can earn up to a set amount each tax year before paying income tax. Understanding your Personal Allowance helps ensure your tax code is correct.
Blind Person’s Allowance
If you’re registered as blind or severely sight impaired, you may be entitled to additional tax-free allowance.
Salary Sacrifice Schemes
Some employers offer salary sacrifice arrangements for pensions, cycle-to-work schemes or other benefits. These can reduce your taxable income while improving long-term financial wellbeing.
A Quick Note
Tax rules and eligibility criteria can change, and entitlement depends on your individual circumstances. The information above is intended as general guidance. Always check GOV.UK or speak to HMRC for the most up-to-date information.
